Why it hurts

Why Pet Loss Hurts So Much

For many, the bond with a pet is as significant — and at times even more profound — than human relationships. They witness our daily lives, offer comfort without judgment, and love us unconditionally.

Their absence leaves a deep emptiness in our routines and in our hearts. It is entirely normal to feel:

Overwhelming sadness Anger or frustration Guilt — “Could I have done more?” Profound loneliness Numbness or disbelief

Pet loss is one form of the broader grief we support every day. You can also learn more about our grief and loss counselling.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I feel silly for being so upset about a pet. Is this normal?

It is completely normal and valid. For many, a pet is a best friend, a family member, and a source of daily comfort. The bond you shared was real, and your grief is a testament to that love. It is not silly, and you deserve support.

Will the therapist take my pet loss seriously?

Absolutely. At Vault, we take your grief seriously. Our therapists understand the unique and profound impact of losing a beloved animal. They will meet you with compassion and without judgment. You can be honest about your loss, and it will be respected.

Why is grief for a pet sometimes harder than grief for a person?

It can feel more isolating because society often doesn’t fully acknowledge the depth of the bond. This is known as “disenfranchised grief.” Additionally, the grief can be linked to all the daily routines and the private, consistent companionship a pet provides, making their absence deeply felt in your everyday life.

How long does pet grief last?

There is no set timeline for grief. Everyone’s journey is unique. Some people may feel a deep sense of loss for weeks or months, while others may find it takes longer to heal. Therapy can help you navigate your grief at your own pace, without pressure to “get over it.”

Do you offer virtual therapy for pet loss grief?

Yes! Vault Mental Health offers virtual therapy across Ontario, so you can access support from the comfort of your own home. We also have in-person locations in Barrie, Whitby, and Port Hope.
